Artist Statement

Grant McGregor is a portrait painter. He draws the identity of his sitters out in a blunt and raw manner. Faces appear from the darkness with a sombre, Rembrandt-esque quality that is highly effective. Charcoals, oils and acrylics all feature in his practice where he moulds a reality. Giving hope to the hopeless. Bringing the dark to light. Revealing a truth to those who are worthy.

He say’s of his latest body of work:

“There is a saying that I have always held in mind – every portrait is a portrait of the artist. In this series of works I have not only used sitters I am directly related to, but I’ve gone beyond that likeness using my own imagination and instinct to interpret their image. So perhaps the best way to view my portraits is in the words of Jean Paul Sartre, “You are what you are not and not what you are”.

McGregor graduated from DJCAD in 2015 with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art (Drawing & Painting). He talks enthusiastically of his current influence’s; Peter Howson and Johannes Vemeer. With the latter pushing him to consider a new addition of elements and objects around his figures.
