Artist Statement

My paintings reflect what it feels like to be a woman or a young girl in a world saturated with superficiality and narcissism, where trying on a new persona is as quotidian as putting on new clothes. We are living in a unique period of human history in which the rapid and extensive introduction of new technologies to all aspects of daily life has created a seismic shift in the way we communicate, work, socialize and relate to ourselves and to each other. I am particularly interested in our culture’s obsession with image and how new technologies and social media platforms influence the way we present ourselves and interact with others. I often use images of women and girls from social media but they are only a starting point. I spend a long time with an image adding layers of meaning through the process of painting and contemplation. Each painting develops organically over a period of time and becomes imbued with my own memories of growing up in a female household. My work is influenced by current and historical cultural attitudes towards femininity, fashion, textiles, notions of delicacy and prettiness associated with being female.
