New Blood Art Statement

Diane Rogan’s painting reflects the hidden space in municipal places which she calls ‘Wild Space.’ Wild Space is a philosophical title, embedding ideas between the broad relationships between urban areas, community and - by extension - the concept of belonging.  Social politics and psychological states are played out through the language of architecture; broken lines and fragmented buildings hold performative symbolism.

These paintings have a connection with familiar surroundings, the trees and buildings provoke memory and recognition. The bright, unnatural palette, however, flicks the switch between the real and the fantasy -  exciting a realm of the unknown. Lurid colours, fragmentation and exaggerated contrasts are unnerving, but the fluid brushstrokes and attention to detail produce new, consoling and inspiring realities. The paintings, therefore, offer a contradiction to symbolise the various connections and possibilities between people and place.

Artist Statement

The most recent body of work that I have made which I have titled This is Nobody’s Land, is about secret urban spaces, what I have called ‘wild space’. Through this theme I am exploring the relationship between urban space, power relationships, the surface of things and community and culture. Piercing line, geometry, multi-perspectives and scale are used to represent different power relations and psychological states. I am attracted to contrast and use harsh light to expose and deep shadows to create anxious voids. Through the use of discordant elements fragmented and collaged I aim to compress space between the viewer and the scene. In representing the different elements in wild space, overlooked unclaimed space is constructed with cracked and broken surfaces. Exposing light, voids, protrusions, unsteady walls and the contrast between areas of detailed realism and painterly abstraction make up these paintings. By using unnatural colours I hope that the painting can be experienced as an imaginary creative space. My hope is that by encountering these re-ordered urban wild spaces in this work the experience may provoke in the viewer a personal memory or reflection on their own relationship between the experience of belonging and marginalization.
