New Blood Art Statement

David Iain Brown’s work is evocative of Germano Celant’s vision of Arte Povera and the idea of the artist as an individual devoted to the “self-projection of human activity”. His work involves a performative reflection on the creative process. Often using found objects from his own and other artists’ studios, he explores the artistic process, and in turn, the life of artists. Brown seemingly comments on artistic intention, through the use of reclaimed objects from other artists’ studios, and through a process of layering (and thus erasing) of his own work. This process of layering, simultaneously hides and reveals his artistic process through blankets of colour and intricate layers of line. Through this technique the work communicates a play between past and present. Brown’s eclectic use of material produces a dynamic and tactile aesthetic, exploring the depths, and indeed meaning, of artistic creation.

Artist Statement

Emerging artist David Iain Brown, lives and works in Glasgow. Since completing his Master’s Degree in Fine Art at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen 2018, Brown has exhibited Internationally. The most recently show was his first solo exhibition at Nina Sagt Gallery in Dusseldorf.

Brown draws on our connection to everyday life his work focuses on the space between abstraction and reality. Taking inspiration from mundane objects, experiences and memories cultivated monotonous within daily life. Whilst Brown’s work is bold, a crucial element is a narrative, built up by a history of layers. The idea of history allows the motion of time passing, ingraining memory within the work. Brown creates a conflict between the additive and subtractive process, the making and unmaking, underlies this soft refined body of work.

Having to return home to south West of Scotland, Brown’s process has taken a more organic turn inspired by the rural surroundings. Gardening with his grandfather, looking more deeply at the environment that he encounters. Extracting from his surrounding he uses quick loose sketches from nature wither that be the organic forms created by a plant or the combinations of colors that are extracted from different gardens. Brown goes straight into creating work with an energetic, loose and gestural manner depending on the scale of the work.
