Artist Statement

Brought up on a farm in rural Cumbria, Art and UniversIty were not something my family did however I realised at twenty one that I had always excelled in Art and that I loved it. I graduated from Exeter and ended up in London in 1995 and by 2000 I was making my living solely from Art. Having explored many different themes and styles I always knew I wanted to be a Landscape painter but didn't seem relevant until 2005 when a move from London to Rural Derbyshire meant at long last I could follow my dream. I have painted in and around the theme of Nature and Landscape ever since. After trying to find a way into plein -air painting for over six years trying different applications and styles I finally found a way which worked for me in 2012. I stripped my colours back worked standing up with a large palette knife. The paint applied thickly and expressively, it is important to me hang onto the subject but I only want to suggest detail and keep the viewer aware that this is paint on a surface. I love the way when one looks at a constable sketch at elements in isolation they make no sense just random marks and yet seen as part of the whole they make sense that mark becomes a person or a branch. Whilst painting outside much more I have also kept in touch with my studio practice and whilst the still life's done in the studio are painted in similar way to my plein-air work I also continue to paint landscapes from imagination. These are painted with much thinner paint and help my hang on to my imagination, I figure if you don't use it you'll lose it and its a good way of processing all I have seen. I continue to develop and fine tune my working methods. I am also listed in the whoswho in Art published by Morven press and was first published in 1927.
