My practice is an exploration of my local Cornish landscape with a focus on its negative spaces; the geographies and histories of heritage and process that fill them with energy and substance explored through a series of shifting, material explorations, testing the limits of sculpture. This intangible matter is sensitively translated into tangible, haptic forms, often using materials that resonate with the places investigated.
Granite has become the heart of my practice, being a material that is very geographically and culturally tied to Cornwall. The process of carving it, and in turn the discourses surrounding the quarry itself, has framed much of my recent work. In my recent works on paper I explore the notion of the stone itself unconventionally 'sculpting' the hand of the artist, through the cuts and bruises from slip ups with the hammer, or from catching a finger on a raw edge of granite.
