New Blood Art Statement

Athena Anastasiou works with the mythologies and stories that have questioned human nature since time immemorial, finding newly playful through-lines. Channelling personal experience into allegory, Anastasiou infuses each piece with her uniquely gestural vocabulary and mystical touch.

This approach reveals itself in startling ways; blushes of pink, points of clotted texture, and loose mark-marking all evoke a deep sense of tenderness. Viewers are encouraged to match this openness, and let the work rouse a shared compassion for the human spirit. Further influence is drawn from the often cryptic yet intuitively felt literature of quantum field physics, and the power of intentional thought.

Artist Statement

I am exploring my own personal mythology that speaks about identity and the core concerns of human existence.

Some of the questions I ask through the work are, where do we come from, why is our planet and wellbeing so out of balance? Defaulting to fear and frustration rather than love and creation and how it is our responsibility individually to shift that.

The aesthetic framework that I use is one of mythology; portraying a feeling of magic, illustrating a life lesson and sometimes featuring mystical creatures. I like to add a sense of lightheartedness using almost child-like expression, as if they are large scale sketches. I aim to provoke a freedom from the left brain thinking to obtain a connection to nature and intuition through an open mind.
