New Blood Art Statement

Featured in Investment Tips
Humour and horror equalise each other in the unexpected illustrative landscapes of Aiden Milligan. Far from observing space in a traditional sense, Milligan rescues the depiction of rural life from banality by portraying allegory and narrative. Perhaps even more surprising is his capacity for creating suspense in the imagery. Indeed, many of the images have a feeling of absence which gives a macabre power to the pieces. Milligan’s confident use of negative space heightens the dramatic effect of each piece, yet the illustrative style refuses to let the creeping sense of threat control the narrative. Instead, the images play out multiple possibilities without succumbing to a fixed reading.

Artist Statement

Visual exploration, fantasising and storytelling are fundamental to my creative process. Who owns stories in an age of globalised interconnectivity? When a vast amount of information is so readily available and we as a society expect such clarity and unquestionable truth. Amid a wider prescient concern of 'fake news', instantaneous sharing of opinion and public/private relational dialogues, my work seeks to mirror a culture of half-truths by creating and disseminating new mythologies and 'fakelore' that often play off a narrative of humour and horror. Researching through local archives, strands of literature, and oral tradition, the stories that pervade the work begin to filter the absurdity of our collective histories by uncovering hidden pasts and obscure stories of place that build on complex layers and thematic strands of personal and inter-personal narratives. The faux mythmaking behind my imagery is usually grounded in strange local discoveries, but can also be connected to a broader discourse of shared information on demand. The meta-narrative is, at times, autobiographical, alluding to weird stories of the 'Scottish Shire', however the work is principally ambiguous and remains open to interpretation.
