Mrs Bateman’s Garden

A couple of miles down the road from our house is Biddulph Grange Garden, a National Trust property I’ve visited many times since I was a child. It’s proved to be the perfect place to take an unsettled babe, so inspiring and exciting in equal measures.. He falls asleep, I get to wander and dream.

I’ve visited so many times over the past few months that I’ve begun a whole new body of work inspired by the gardens, in particular, Mrs Bateman’s garden, a small, intimate space set out in the cottage garden style, with dahlias fighting for space in its beds.

interesting to see your perspective shift from sky to land and yet your visual language retains its characteristic voice – there is clearly a sense of grounding here though – I think this piece is a success.
