Falling in love again…

…with a technique I haven’t used since I was a student. I have just started experimenting with linocuts for the first time in years.  I think it’s the sheer graphic quality of them I like, and the challenge of reducing an image down to the bare essentials.

I started with a familiar motif, love hearts, and am now trying to see how other images will translate into this medium. I’m using calligraphy fibre tip pens at the moment to develop the line. I couldn’t resist drawing this cherry cupcake. In the sketch I have stripped it back to line only; I won’t know until I start cutting the lino how true it will stay to the initial image.

Thanks, Helen! It actually feels good to get stuck into something new (ish) and enjoy the whole process again.

Hi Diane – nice work – have you ever seen Emily Eveleth’s work – I think that in terms of cakes and things she took over from Wayne Thiebaud. Not that there’s much similarity visible in your works but somehow the give me the same feeling. Anyway, nice one!
