Just received the brilliant news that I’ve a work accepted for exhibition at The Royal West of England Academy’s Autumn exhibition. Yaaay!
Here’re (in reverse order, because I can’t figure out how to upload photos in the proper sequence) some shots of a work in progress. Unfortunately, one forgot to take photos of the first three stages of the
work. Sorry about that. However, I can tell you this. The first three stages were rubbed in with a basic triad
and a very light-bodied two-week old No-Sun oil and the subsequent layers were painted with a slightly, heavier-bodied three-week oil.

Started the painting with raw umber, black and yellow ochre and gradually added lead white and

vermillion to the mix – all that scumbling and glazing’s brought about some wonderfully quiet colour nuances in the darker and middle tones – they’re diaphenously thin and almost scintillating. The lights
are whacked on…
…You can tell that I’m happy with this one.

After a brief visit to London – I became (again) so inspired by Waterhouse’s paintings. Couldn’t resist it – over the years I’ve made hesitant sketches of the beautiful portraits drawn and painted by Waterhouse. Just for fun I thought that I’d try turning one of my pencil studies into an oil sketch. There’s something (other than the lovely method of painting) that he had in descibing this longing gaze. What a marvellous ideal.

Sometimes making a painting is challenging and then sometimes

it can go way beyond that. Then even sometimes you push yourself even further,

way beyond what you even

imagined you were capable of. I’m mentally exhausted after this effort.

Here’s the final, about-to-be-varnished layer

on my copy of my favourite painting of all-time. I’ve slaved over the drawing,

tones and transitions and probably over-painted it, but have learned

so much in the process. I do need a break.

There are thoughts hovering on my mental horizon suggesting

doing this again, but a lot more elegantly. We’ll see.

I’m off to France in just over a week and will be taking this with

for an exhibition in the beautiful village of Grignan in Provence during the

annual Festival De la Correspondence. I’ll be exhibiting at my good friend

Mireille Favergeon’s place – she’s an amazing ceramicist of

deservedly international repute –

I was quite unsettled with the original composition that I’d chosen for this self-portrait, so I cropped the canvas down and that’s when things started to happen.

Only hindsight really allows us to see what goes on, and luckily I wasn’t too far into this to be inflexible about my decisions.

Suddenly it seemed like a lot of (for want of a better word) fun. As said, I got the inspiration from Nerdrum’s ‘Self-portrait with red cape’ but didn’t want to

over-work the ear, so that’s maybe a little underworked.

There’s light bounce on the photo but I had a well wicked time playing with the transition from jaw to cheek and trapezius to sternocleido mastoid.

To say nothing of the cloth hat ! This even almost looks like me. Finally. ‘Suddenly The Sun Came Out (Bellerophon)’ 250mm x 250mm Oil on lead-primed fine linen 2011.

I hope that you’re all well. Trying to stay true to my promise to get some flower studies under my belt – here are some daffodils picked from our garden. The ambition’s been there to paint daffs for years - the hope is to get another couple done before the season’s over. Tried to hit it in one go but some of the colours muted out due to some bad mixing on my part. However, a fresh pass with no added medium and, voila. Here are also two quick shots of paintings in progress in the studio. The sink is an ebauche of a subject that I’d been asked to remake (don’t you love paintings at this stage, too?) The daisies are a larger painting started at the same time (few months ago) as a small. I wanted to get the heads right and then for giggles work the background more subtly (backwards painting) in order to see what I could do get light to fall softly against the wall at the rear. A bit of varnishing’ll bring out the deep rich reds and darks on the petals. Dunno yet if I’ll strengthen the leaves, they look ghostly as they are and that’s a bit interesting. Hmmm.

…As I found out that I’d in fact been suffering from a vicious little lung infection. Joy. I’m not going to jinx myself by saying that i’m over it, I’m still cream crackered. Anyway, that’s enough about me – let’s talk about me . Just finished preparing a new batch of no-sun linseed oil à la Tad Spurgeon (diamond geezer). Woohooo! And am busy using it and occasionally giving away small samples to colleagues. Oooh, it’s lovely. Anyway, back to the pictures that I’m posting. I know, single-subject, still-lifes – I didn’t promise to stay away from these, and in all fairness I’m using them to trying to get to grips with establishing three-dimensionality and bravura but the multiple- subject still-lifes are coming along. All these paintings are teeny tiny. I’ve a couple of more complex works on the go (apart from the small study of onions and garlic.) It’s been a little challenge to keep the drawing of the non-organic objects solid whilst trying to put more paint down. Big thanks, again to Charles for getting me out of a rut regarding the adressing the hierachy of darks-to-lights and daring to be bold enough to put down perceived colours. Cheers, mate. I’m really working on it. The constant assessment of form and re-drawing by scratching in reference lines and points with the end of my brush whilst working seems to be really helpful in stabilising the forms. Oh yes, I’ve had a portrait painting accepted for display in the Jacobsens Portrait Prize Competition – the Scandinavian portrait exhibition!
