THRESHOLD

2012 began breezily and spaciously just as the last year ended with regular working time along the Charmouth and Seatown stretch of coast and more recently at the splendid coastguard lookout studio space in Studland. As some will remember from previous blogs I’m renting it from the National Trust this winter and I’ve been catching [...]

QUIET HOLLY

I went onto heathland around the edge of the ‘Little Sea’ one bright morning last week. A small holly was shining as if it’s lights were on. I decided to return the next morning with an MDF panel and acrylics. It struck me that I wanted to work with its vibrant abundance. On that second quiet morning I doubted [...]

STUDIO NOTES: SHREW

A visitor shrew slips out from a crack in the floor a busy snout I reckon he has been feeding on the dead flies whose body parts and wings litter the floor since my last visit. He runs up my drawing board and over the back proccupied  and unafraid

HEADING NORTH

I’m flying North to Inverness tomorrow for a week painting in a lodge near the Applecross Hills. I’ve been going for 3 years now. Each time the stay is infused with a different poignancy. The first year my paintings seemed to have the roaring stags as background ‘noise’. The second time it was a mixture [...]

GENEROUS BABYLON

I’m just packing the picture packaging to return to Ely in Cambridgeshire where I’m offering an Artist talk (on Friday 15th July at 7pm The Babylon Gallery, Waterside, Ely.  babylongallery-blog.co.uk | adec.org.uk) and then returning with  the work to Dorset. I had an opportunity to show DRAWN TO ANTARCTICA ( a body of work I’m developing after a trip to [...]

REMINDERS OF REMINDERS

Ive been wondering about e mail persistence about events/ exhibitions we artists are trying to advertise. I’ve recently been challenged (irritated actually) by the persistence of the e mail reminders about the Cork Street Open. The reminders seemed to go on for months …of course I do subscibe to the weekly ‘Your Art Image’ by Kathryn Roberts- some of [...]

FROZEN YOGURT TO FROZEN ORCHESTRAS

COASTGUARD STUDIO

I have just rented a studio for the coming winter season. It is perched on the edge of the low cliff above the beach… I went to visit it the other day and I’ve inserted the photo into this post. It is always good for me to have a space to ‘go out’ to work. The shelter [...]

STAR BUCKS’ MOMENT

Something beautiful happened this morning in Starbucks. I sat down for my first medium soya cappuccino of Easter and a woman came to sit between me and the window. She was texting- we didn’t ever make contact but we both were enjoying the music- I found my foot tapping and I looked across to see her [...]

New Blood Art Blog

Welcome to our blog. This is a space where you can find observations, thoughts, considerations and information - voiced in a personal way - from the perspectives of our artists, and from each other. Making art can sometimes be a lonely practice, particularly for artists who are starting out. Our artists very much value your comments about the artwork they exhibit on Newbloodart, as well as the opportunity to build a relationship with you. So please feel free to respond briefly or at length to whatever you find here.*

Our artists use this space to write about everything from the frustrations of work; exhibits that inspire; radio programmes enjoyed; technical problems to be resolved; difficult decisions about what to show, and just when a piece can or must be called finished. They sometimes use it to publicize exhibitions and talks; to publicly resist the need for a consistent style; to make unusual analogies, comparisons and connections (and, occasionally, to make embarrassing admissions). Click on the artists below to follow their strands.

We look forward to reading what you think.
