Baum makes fresh and invigorating connections with an increasingly ignored nature. The young artist was selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries in 2009, where the judges included Ellen Gallagher, Saskia Olde Wolbers, John Stezaker and Wolfgang Tillmans, who reviewed over 10,000 slides and hundreds of videos to bring together the showcase of contemporary talent. Baum’s ‘Lunar Mare’ series received high praise from Wolfgang Tillmans himself: "It’s a very specific vision-it’s definitely something I have never seen before and it is an achievement."
Furthermore, Myka’s work followed on to be selected for long-term display at Arts Council England alongside only 9 other recent New Contemporaries.

At the heart of my practice lies a fascination with cycles of transformation and an attempt to encapsulate natural phenomena through abstract processes. Light plays an integral role within my work and there is an ambiguity between the precision of photographic apparatus and the structured randomness of the organic.
One of my main bodies of work to date has been inspired by the moon. In ‘Luna Mare’ 2008, the reflection of the moon trembles between a synthetic construction and a natural phenomena.
Since 2011, I have been developing several bodies of work exploring the subject of edible gardening in an urban environment.
In ‘Rotten’ I am exploring the use of film as matter – placing seeds and soil onto the physical film.
Once I feel that there has been sufficient growth or corrosion on the film I will scan the negatives for printing. When encountering my work the painstaking process is to an extent out of sight – the viewer is left with essentially an abstract image, being left to unravel the layers of natural and mechanical reproduction.
In ‘City Plots’ I create imagined city farms by photographing urban grey spaces that could potentially be used for food growing. I then either transplant edible plants into the photographic print, or grow seedlings from within the print itself.
