New Blood Art Statement

A passionate spectator, Warren Keating participates and refreshes a centuries’ old discourse on modernity and the metropolis by twisting surveillance into flânerie.

Baudelaire spoke of the “immense joy to set up house in the heart of the multitude, amid the ebb and flow of movement, in the midst of the fugitive and the infinite…to be at the centre of the world, and yet to remain hidden from the world - impartial natures which the tongue can but clumsily define.” But Susan Sontag was more measured, noting both the sense in which the flâneur/photographer is an “armed version of the solitary walker reconnoitering”, and the double taint-virtue of being a “connoisseur of empathy”.

Keating explores the borderline between a cold, disengaged surveying eye or camera and the moment when the spectacle is flooded with passion, and a languid, absorbed tenderness for a stranger is born.

Artist Statement

My latest works are the result of collecting photographs and video of unwitting subjects from balconies in France, digitizing them on a computer and painting them on canvas. This series brings together many elements  that artists have explored throughout the 20th Century: abstract naturalism, expressive realism, narrative painting, photography and video. In each work, I expressively paint organic shapes of  foreshortened figures forming dynamic relationships with the patterns  and walkways of their urban environments. Opposing elements of photography and abstraction somehow come together in this blending of 20th century painting ideas; abstraction, expression and narration with  21st Century technology; digitized video, satellite surveillance and internet voyeurism.

I use Expressionistic mark-making to depict walking subjects, stop-action, capturing them mid-step in thick paint that renders motion in the form of video scan lines and pixel artifacts. I have painstakingly selected the exact frame, from hundreds, that tells us the story of each character, and rendered the digital nature of each image in a painterly style depicting a privileged view of a private moment.
