The clash of paint with collage, with neither method dominating the other is important to this artist. It preserves a dreamlike disorder and encourages closer inspection.
At times these artworks function as a reinvention of traditional painting subjects. The narrative of the Northern Renaissance landscape, the Arcadian idyll of Poussin, or the nineteenth-century English pastoral often provide a base, or a template for disassembling and reworking. A love of history infuses these pieces: art history, natural history, Irish and English history, exploration, colonisation, and an occasional reversal of the historical narrative.
