New Blood Art Statement
Stuart Barnes produces conceptual/abstract works. His paintings comment on the nature of artistic influence and question the widely perceived canon of the history of art. He turns the concept of his influences on its head and works around themes of finding compositional balance. The resulting works are bold with thick brush strokes and demonstrate a love and understanding of colour.

Artist Statement
My recent paintings are all concerned with trying to make works which inherently recognize their status as objects in a particular space, and that whilst someone may pause a while to look at them, the viewer is always on the verge of moving on. Indeed, some of the paintings actively encourage this by directing the eye away from them and into the space surrounding them.Through my practice, I am trying to resolve whether it is possible to make our own decisions within a cultural and historical framework which pre-determines many of those decisions for us. Painting's well-rehearsed history, language and economic object-value inescapably influences both the viewing of - and the production of - paintings in insidious ways.
I find my own development influenced by artists whose work I have often only encountered though books or the internet - through documentation, digitized records and photographs. I am trying to gain some degree of freedom of expression by absorbing this mediation into the paintings themselves.
