Coco Hewitt creates large scale abstract paintings that negotiate the relationship between surface and depth in a really sophisticated and profound way. Impossibly the artist manages to combine the graphic marks of graffiti with a Romantic sublime, just see the nocturnal, awe-inspiring eerieness of ‘Woods Part I’, its ominous quality of surveillance. Marked by the influence of graffiti, the work challenges the divide between high and low brow, and the quarantining of graffiti away from fine art.
