I am fascinated by the formal considerations of line, spacing, form, colour and light. Still life in particular gives me the chance to investigate these fundamental aspects of image making. I enjoy the calm contemplative nature of the genre, the time it allows for analysis of the process of painting and the intimacy and directness that shows in the finished work. Parallel to this enquiry into vision and paint runs my inner exploration, to memories and associations, letting them influence the feel and look of the piece. In my landscape paintings, this visceral aspect of my process takes precedence over the formal. When I paint the world outside the studio my approach is to edit and rearrange reality with the intention of expressing the essence of the scene.
The motivations and ideas behind my paintings are essentially non-verbal. For me, the act of painting brings freedom from the convention of language, and creates a state of mind where I can revel in the visual world and enjoy the feelings it inspires. I hope the viewer can participate in this freedom when looking at my work.
