New Blood Art Statement

For those in search of painting with permanence, Rosemary Lewis represents extraordinary value and staying power. While these intricate miniatures have a timeless charm and beauty, hyperrealist contemporary artists such as Mauro David and Duane Hanson draw significant crowds. Lewis’ acute studies balance incredible detail with simple, geometric compositions.

Ranging from 7 – 25cm it should be easy to find a place for the work of this promising artist.

Artist Statement

Painting is my means of exploring and connecting to the visual world and the almost intangible feelings associated with it. By replicating elements of what I see, elements that I select, modify and present to the viewer in paint, I aim to communicate my feelings about the subject and stir the viewer’s own emotions and aesthetic sense. I paint whatever I am moved by, whether it is a simple everyday object as it catches the light from a north facing window,  or clouds sweeping across the sky casting fleeting shadows on the ground below.

I am fascinated by the formal considerations of line, spacing, form, colour and light. Still life in particular gives me the chance to investigate these fundamental aspects of image making.  I enjoy the calm contemplative nature of the genre, the time it allows for analysis of the process of painting  and the intimacy and directness that shows in the finished work.  Parallel to this enquiry into vision and paint runs my inner exploration, to memories and associations, letting them influence the feel and look of the piece. In my landscape paintings, this visceral aspect of my process takes precedence over the formal. When I paint the world outside the studio my approach is to edit and rearrange reality with the intention of expressing the essence of the scene.

The motivations and ideas behind my paintings are essentially non-verbal. For me, the act of painting brings freedom from the convention of language, and creates a state of mind where I can revel in the visual world and enjoy the feelings it inspires. I hope the viewer can participate in this freedom when looking at my work.
