New Blood Art Statement

Willett’s paintings are visually mesmerizing, tonal paintings that emerge from what seems like an endearing and hopeful obsessive compulsion – a visual ambiguity is manifest. The finished effect is like watching continually moving shoals of fish or swarming insects. Sara Willett’s paintings are held in collections in the UK and throughout the world, and her work has been featured in A-N magazine.

Artist Statement

The most recent series of paintings – SHADOWEBS - is directly informed by the immersive, large scale installations of forest like environments that I create from crocheted elastic. The webs themselves act as a form of template to the paintings - reversing the negative spaces, playing with the stability of the viewing experience, the ‘in’ and the ‘out’ and the disruption and saturation of the colour field.  The results can be interpreted in a variety of ways; as micro-biological forms, as cosmic entities or sci-fi journeys. Both playful and serious they stand alone or as a series, each one unique.

The current paintings and installations are a continuation of my investigations into the potential of the visually decorative in the plastic arts to cause various forms of optical or psychological disturbances.  The body of work I name the GAUGED series, looks at of the possibilities of tracing rhythm and movement through the excavation of a surface.  Working with ideas around fluidity, control and boundaries, I begin with boards to which layers of paint are applied and then systematically gauged to reveal concentric circles of colour. The aesthetic judgments are made primarily at the layering stage; what emerges during the physical process of excavation is largely fortuitous. The process creates an enticing, surface of repetitive, convex hollows that confuse the eye and trick the brain. The finished works are both complicated and simple, leaving space for the intensity of the making experience to manifest itself visually.
