Nick Hazzard walks the fine line between being master of his medium and being mastered by it. These bright paintings are battlegrounds for order and chaos: paint drips, but only so far, a smudge is repeated for balance. In the series of 'Shift' paintings he pushes the limits of a single colour, while elsewhere he works in multiple primary colours, finding himself surprised by the sometimes accidental beauty in his own vibrant creations.

In many of my paintings simple shapes or symbols are buried, blurred or disrupted. Sequence, layering and process all play a part. This can be seen in the new “Reveal” series. Here squares and rectangles disappeared beneath thick layers of paint which was then scrapped back creating organic, flowing shapes that partly obscure and contrast with the original geometry glimpsed beneath. Abstract Expressionism meets Hard Edge Painting maybe, and as with other work sweeping marks are sabotaged by a solid, precise geometry while swathes of flowing colour are brought to an abrupt halt. The way colours interact is important. I often use complementary colours to create vibrating boundaries that add drama. But whatever technique I’m using it comes back to the search for that elusive point of oscillating tension somewhere between chaos and order where new and undreamt of things can emerge.
