New Blood Art Statement

Churchill paints reminiscent but abstracted forms: at one point a series of monkey portraits emerging from this abstraction. This body of work shows an idiosyncratic and engaging tact with colour. Her work explores hybridity, Darwinism and morphologies of forms, sampling and reconstructing different terrains and organic matter. Most of all the work emits a dynamic curiosity and sense of wonder. Churchill’s work has been published on the cover of Volume magazine and she was invited to exhibit in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2008.

Artist Statement

I work with bright luminescent colour, painting forms that cross between recognisable and reminiscent.  With empty void backgrounds I reference deep sea and space photography, while free form improvised structures create the basis of many paintings contrasting with portraits inspired by nineteenth-century daguerreotypes and autochromes.  I use colour chromatically, in gradations that range from monochrome to acid drop intensities.  I am influences by biomorphic forms, sampling and the false colour images of electron micrographs, as well as my current fascination with early forms of portrait photography.
