Santos creates seriously enigmatic compositions that contain a teasing element of performance, drawing out the inherent ability of the photograph to establish a moment as fact. Often depicting animals, she raises up to the surface of the visible photography’s lurking potential to make the familiar strange, and the strange familiar.

Artist Statement
I am inspired by Fairy Tales where the world around us, specially the Natural World, becomes a place full of Mystery and Magical meanings. I am also inspired by the Film Noir visual style, for it’s relation to the Surreal with all its drama, alienation and melancholy.Animals are always the protagonists in my unlikely scenes because of their relation of Otherness to the human world. They stand against an alienating city backdrop in the manner of a reportage style, or a casual encounter. In these particular images there is an added twist on the ‘Beatrix Potter” and ‘Alice in Wonderland’ stories. I am also inspired by the likes of ‘Wizard of Oz’, “Mary Poppins’ and the film ‘Harvey’.
I intend to invest my images with a magical and surreal nature for this is the one aspect of Photography that most fascinates me. Like reverting to a time in childhood, where one plays at “make believe”, I am in the position of subverting reality using an apparently objective medium.
