We were first struck by the intense colours of Caroline Hall’s seemingly abstract series. After truly absorbing the brushstrokes however, (and encouraged by the titles) we begin to see fleeting landscapes in the paint. Hall manages to convey a true sense of each landscape and time of day- remarkably different in each piece- without the unnecessary detail. For us, suspending this type of view brings back memories of long car journeys as children- provoking nostalgia for personal experiences as well as for the traditional countryside. - NEW BLOOD ART
The main focus of Caroline’s work is video and painting, and the boundaries that exist between the temporal and the static. All her paintings have their roots in the moving image. The pixel paintings are inspired by abstract images which are projected onto the canvas surface in an endless loop. The passing paintings are based on landscapes filmed from cars and trains. Caroline’s painting attempts to capture a reflection of events in tangible form, condensing fleeting moments without eliminating the energy and momentum of time. This is a constantly evolving process as she experiments with different colours, materials and surfaces. The majority of these works are on very thin shetts of aluminium. The ultra smooth surface is perfect for her style of painting; by mounting them on sub frames, the paint can literally fall of the edges.
Caroline is not trying to reach conclusions but set up a process that embraces contemporary issues and at the same time force her to engage with the tradition of painting.
