Recognition begins the instant we encounter any form of representation, our cognitive memory grasps onto certain aspects and we begin to interpret what we see. Dawn’s current work is an investigation into this process of perception, how we forge mental links in order to understand.

“I am interested in the metaphor of language as a structure, one that can be broken down and pieced back together in a limitless combination of parts in order to communicate. The restrictions of the ceramic process as well as the possibilities within the discipline form an interesting part of the ceramic language.
I experiment with different devices achievable within this language in order to understand what functions as a sign. My surroundings continue to influence the forms, they are taken from a variety of sources; drawn marks, clay gestures, photographs, 2D signs, and these rather than being subject matter in themselves, act as vehicles for exploring representation and recognition. Each piece presents the viewer with a challenge to interpret its individual identity, but viewed as a whole ceramic landscape, my use of form, colour, surface and arrangement is intended to encourage connections and to lead the viewer from piece to piece, experiencing numerous possible narratives.”
