We really enjoy Razvan Anton’s work; both his drawings in charcoal on paper and his photography. Both mediums use a monochrome to tell different stories. Razvan’s works are very powerful – especially the charcoal pieces which remind us of the twin towers – great structures humming with the buzz of man's presence and then lost... empty black negative spaces on the horizon. – Newbloodart.
The most important topics to Razvan Anton in his work are identity and space. Through exploring these concepts visually, Anton has become more and more aware of the social role of artists and their questioning power and how they are making their presence more visible in society.
Anton’s work is influenced by the art of the German Neoexpressionists; Baselitz, Kiefer, Lupertz, Penck, Hodicks, and also more independent artists such as William Kentridge and Peter Doig.
Anton is currently focused on drawing and photography, a visual approach that is the illustration of an ongoing process, a thinking process. He feels that drawing and photography have an immediate power, because of the directness and rawness of their expression.
The view of the world that Anton portrays in his work is a symbolic one;
“The objects depicted are transformed into something else. Elements of urban space become shadows and holes. They become isolated and frightening. The only spatial reference left is their monumentality. The simple, geometrical structures become living creatures, moving towards a psychological approach of identity and space, rather than a physical one.”
