We first came across Alexandra Abraham's work at an art fair – where it really stood out from the crowd. These works are just beautiful in the flesh – each one with its collection of unique 3 dimensional pieces and found materials interwoven with real metallic leafing and jewel coloured multilayered paint. They are a joy and would add glamour and nostalgia to any space.
Alexandra is inspired by childhood memories of gilded and jewel encrusted icons glowing in the candle lit darkness of the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of All Saints in Knightsbridge.
Abraham's paintings incorporate multiple layers of thin acrylic glazes and applied bands of carefully chosen objects, many of which are unique and irreplaceable. She uses vintage buttons from her mother's sewing basket, treasures from her father's old coin box; pieces from her huge collection of sea glass, shells and pebbles picked up on travels around the world, ceramic shards from ancient gardens in England and France; crystals, gemstones and Venetian glass. These are then wrapped in 22 carat gold or aluminium leaf, and the surfaces are carefully rubbed back to reveal vibrant colours, rich textures, images and patterns. Like alchemy, the glowing micro-thin metals transform her materials: old worn coins become miniature renaissance portraits and faded seashells are transformed into tiny sculptures.
Working to commission Abraham can also incorporate the client's own precious pieces into her work.
Alexandra Abraham is a graduate from Loughborough College of Art and Design, having studied a BA Honours Degree in Woven Textile Design
