Janice Kok fuses abstraction and figuration to create hybrid paintings that are essentially decorative and which explore relationships of colour area against colour area."I remain an admirer of those colourists who make paint sing... a long catalogue of heroes: John Hoyland, Albert Irvin, Barbara Rae, Martin Maloney, Patrick Heron, Henri Matisse."
Kok uses acrylic paint with the highest colourfastness and pigmentation and experiments with all
forms of mixed media as the specific subject may dictate.
Her decisions are based predominantly on formal issues, believing that composition forms the linchpin of a good painting with colour always engaging with it.
Her subject matter is wide and varied, including Whitby, geology, biodiversity, still life and coincidence. With recent sortees to North Yorkshire producing a series of work about Whitby, she is currently researching for the next body of work about book titles.
