Frances Hatch does a good deal of her work at the sea’s edge – especially in winter. For two winter seasons she rented a disused coastguard hut in Studland, Isle of Purbeck. This winter a visit to India offered a feast of warmth and colour. Most of the time in the UK she works at dawn and dusk, usually when alone in the landscape. However in these Indian pieces she is painting in bazaars, on the sea shore- at all times there are people animating the scene.
"The fast changing light and intensity of colour absorbs my attention at either ends of the day. I wrestle with the sensations as I am caught up in the energy of it all.''
In looking at the paintings we get a blast of the weather and open air that Hatch thrives on. She works on lots of different sorts of paper and surfaces, also she integrates sand, clay or found textures from the ground around her when it seems appropriate. Included in this collection are paintings made on location in Dorset, The Grand Canyon, India and Antarctica.
